How to accelerate appropriate care with in-depth benchmark-comparison reports on a national or hospital level
About the collaboration
OLVG is an Amsterdam based hospital with locations in East and West Amsterdam. They wished to put the topic of appropriate care on the agenda in a more structural way by participating in the ZE&GG program.
The challenge
The year 2021 marks the start of the Dutch national healthcare evaluation program on appropriate care (ZE&GG), motivating our clients not only to actively implement evidence-based appropriate care best practices but also to prove to legislators and healthcare payers that the care they deliver is in line with these best practices. Without proper insights into how they performed on these best practices, our clients were struggling to successfully initiate this program.
The solution
LOGEX ZE&GG-team (part of our Financial Analytics team) helps to accelerate appropriate care in the Netherlands, by offering in-depth benchmark-comparison reports on proven, nationally selected best practices (ZE&GG topics) on a national and hospital level. One example of a hospital that has benefited from the work of our ZE&GG team is the Amsterdam based hospital OLVG. Pauline Gabriëls, Madelon Mok and Bas Dronkert, Healthcare Analysts at OLVG are working together on this project. Pauline shares her experience:
“Although the concept of appropriate care is already rooted in the culture of OLVG, it is still a challenge to implement it into the daily practice of our care providers. We see that our outcomes in treatment choices are generally very efficacious when compared to other hospitals. However, we do not always achieve these results in the most efficient way. For us, appropriate care is getting a proper balance between the right care in the right place by the right provider at the right time. To improve on this, we felt we needed to really put the topic of appropriate care on the agenda in a more structural way.”

The impact
“By using the LOGEX Appropriate Care Monitor, we can demonstrate that we score well on many criteria already. It gave enormous gratification to several departments that could now prove they excel in appropriate care. At the same time, the Appropriate Care Monitor gives us insight into the areas where we can work more efficiently. In general, the monitor naturally inspired departments to focus on working more efficiently. In specific cases, the data from the monitor have functioned as a conversation starter with our care providers. It is a springboard for a deeper analysis of our own data, really drilling down on a specific healthcare activity or patient group, specifically where we deviate from the benchmark. In this deeper analysis, we can make the data even more insightful to our doctors, for instance by discussing inter doctor variations. This really helps with getting doctors engaged with ZE&GG topics and committed to improving their own practices.
Overall, the LOGEX Appropriate Care Monitor has been tremendously instrumental in accelerating the adoption of appropriate care by showing us a heat map: a detailed overview of where our improvement potential was. At the same time, the data from the monitor function as proof points when we enter into negotiations with healthcare payers. Being able to confidently make statements that are backed up by data really helps our position in these negotiations.”
